Plains Zebras - Equus Quagga – Also known as the Burchell’s Zebra is the one you will find at Jukani and is also the most widespread of the Zebra species. There are Mountain Zebras and Grevy’s Zebra (The largest of the 3 species)– Found in Ethiopia and Kenya. It is the smallest of the three species of Zebra.
Plains Zebra is a very social animal and there is usually a male with a couple of females and some young that form what is known as a harem
The Southern Plains Zebra have a distinctive brown shadow stripe between the black and white stripes and the further North that you find them, the less visible this stripe becomes. Body Stripes are broader and extend around the belly.
Typical of the horse family they have a gestation period of 11-13 months.
A lesser-known fact about Plains Zebras is that their stripes may help in regulating body temperature. Researchers have discovered that the black and white stripes create tiny air currents on the Zebra's body due to the different heat absorption rates of the dark and light stripes. These air currents help cool the Zebra, providing a natural cooling mechanism in the hot African savanna. Additionally, the stripes disrupt the vision of biting insects, making it harder for them to land on the Zebra’s skin.
